Back in 2017 I decided to start a podcast. There were a few around, notably in the US, but not that many in the UK. Because I like throwing myself into new creative projects, I launched it with a series of fantastic guests - musicians, writers, researchers, teachers, and creative folk of all kinds, including mythologist Dr Martin Shaw, genius artist Mark Golding, and yoga teacher Carolyn Cowan. You can check out all these episodes, and many more, by clicking the Podcast link at the top of this Substack’s Homepage.
What for seven years has been known as The Lumieres Podcast will now be under the same name as this Substack and my longtime Instagram handle - Life In Fractals. From 2024 on, all my output lives in one place: the home of all my written work and now, my podcast episodes too. This makes much more sense to me, and hopefully to any of you who are here reading and listening. Thank you for your support.
The amazing logo illustration by my talented friend Marta remains the same. What was previously designed as a lighthouse for The Lumieres, also makes sense to me with the podcast as a form of fractal light, disseminating out via the internet. Scientists have discovered that fractal light is a reality. “Fractal light theory is a branch of physics that explores the behavior of light within fractal geometries. Fractals are complex geometric patterns that repeat at different scales, and the study of how light interacts with these patterns can lead to a better understanding of optical phenomena.”

Initially, I thought the only way to make a podcast was to put everything into it, put out super regular episodes and generally be really really on it and hyper-productive. I quickly realised that that mode is not one I enjoy, or am suited to, as someone with multiple interests. But for some reason I kept trying. I started to do them in batches, a bunch of episodes released every two weeks as a season over several months. This made more sense than anything else, but still left me feeling a bit pressured to produce.
The foundational, guiding principal for the podcast has always been the metaphor of the slowly weaving thread, something that takes its time and runs in a pace of its own, responding to naturally occurring links and connections in the criss-crossing web of life. And so, that is how it moves forward – with a new name, and an ethos that feels true to the initial aim: spread inspiring conversations and stories at the intersection where creative expression, holistic health, and grounded spirituality meet.
I hope you’ll join me for the next phase of this project.
If you have a few minutes, do head into the podcast archive and have a look around, I’m sure there will be something you’ll find of interest there, whether it is Gwyn Edwards telling the tales of the Welsh mythical fairy folk, the Tylwyth Teg, Dani Tonks guiding us to a more somatic approach to life, Stephen Hugh-Jones recounting his time living with the tribes of deepest Colombia or many more wonderful episodes.
Of course, it is also available wherever you get your podcasts, be that in Spotify, Pocketcasts, Google or Apple, so do subscribe and/or follow me over there if that is your preferred option.
The very first episode of the newly re-named Life In Fractals podcast is coming soon. It is a belter of a conversation with a truly wonderful human: Sian O’Gorman, co-founder and musical director of the incredible NYX electronic drone choir.
